What began as a two-page attempt to poke holes in the seemingly absurd biblical story of Balaam and his talking donkey became a 36-page journey of discovery. A closer reading of Numbers 22–24 revealed something far more interesting: a remarkably complex narrative whose contradictions, competing portrayals of Balaam, ancient parallels, and later attempts to explain them may preserve traces of how the story itself came together.
